HOW YOU KNOW A SPRING IS GONE.
- A loud bang from the garage, like something snapped. It did.
- The opener strains, then gives up, or the door only lifts a few inches.
- A visible gap in the coil above the door.
- The door slams down faster than it should, or sits crooked in the tracks.
- Lifting it by hand suddenly feels like a deadlift.
Springs do the actual lifting on a garage door. The opener just tells them when. Every open and close counts as one cycle, and standard springs are built for about 10,000 of them, so after seven to ten years a break isn't bad luck. It's arithmetic.
When one spring breaks, its partner has the same mileage. Replacing only the broken one means the old spring drags the new one out of balance and puts you right back where you started in a year or two. We replace both, set the tension to your door's actual weight, and test the balance before we leave.
A word of caution: a wound torsion spring stores enough force to break a hand. It's the one garage door job you should never try with a YouTube video and a socket set. Our technicians do it with winding bars, the right way, every week of the year.
